Tiap-tiap PLC pada dasarnya merupakan sebuah mikrokontroler (CPU-nya PLC bisa berupa mikrokontroler maupun mikroprosesor) yang dilengkapi dengan periferal yang dapat berupa masukan digital, keluaran digital atau relay. Perangkat lunak programnya sama sekali berbeda dengan bahasa komputer seperti pascal, Basic, C dan lain-lain, programnya menggunakan apa yang dinamakan sebagai diagram tangga atau ladder diagram. CPM1A dan CPM2A merupakan PLC produk Omron, perbedaan mendasar antara CPM1A dan CPM2A adalah fungsi dan jumlah terminal masukan dan keluarannya, CPM1A 10 memiliki 6 masukan (I0 – I5) dan 4 keluaran (O0 – O3) total jalur keluaran/masukan, sedangkan CPM2A memiliki 20 jumlah keluaran dan masukan yang jauh lebih banyak, yaitu 12 masukan dan 8 keluaran (total 20 jalur keluaran/masukan).
